A Journey Through Learning Earth Lapbook - REVIEW

 

 

 

A Journey Through Learning Lapbooks was created by Paula & Nancy.  They are two homeschooling moms who wanted quality hands on items for their children as they were teaching them at home.  They knew that this was an area that was lacking in homeschooling materials.  Between them both they have 6 children.  Where would they get the time to create something?  Let alone run a business.  Well they started with Unit Studies and it blossomed into lapbooks.  To read more about their story click here.

 

 



So if you are new to homeschooling, you may be wondering, "What is a lapbook?"  Don't let that term scare you away.  It's really quite simple and fun!  A lapbook is where you use manila folders (we use both regular and legal size in our projects).  Most lapbooks come in the e-file format though I have seen ones pre-printed.  You cut out the different information sections, fill them out as you read books, the information provided with the lapbook, watch videos on the web, and add whatever else you like!  Really quite simple. 

We were introduce to lapbooks about 3 years ago through another review program.  At first it seems intimidating, but it really is quite easy to do.  The Library becomes your best friend (if it isn't already).  We really love lapbooking.  It's such a creative way to do a unit study.  You can make the amount of time spent on it as short or as long as you want.  I try to spend at least 2 - 3 weeks on a lapbook.  This way I feel like my children are learning about the topic studied.  The AJTL lapbooks can take 2-4 weeks.  But really how much time you want to spend on it is what you determine. 

I love the vast amount of topics that are offered in lapbooks.  It seems that there is one for everything!  A Journey Through Learning offers SO many different ones!  They have lapbooks for Apologia Science curriculum you may be using.  There are also ones for holidays, history, Classical Conversations and so much more!

We worked on the lapbook for The Earth.  It is for 1st - 4th grades.  Now, you may be thinking, "your kids are in 5th and k grades".  This is very true.  But by using books appropriate for their level of understanding I made it more for their grade level. 

In the lapbook is a list of suggested books for you to read with your children or them to read alone if they are able to do so.  I chose a few of the ones listed in the lapbook and also chose a few others that were grade appropriate for my boys. 

Most of the books were read aloud and because there was a good bit of information already put into the lapbook so we read that aloud as well.  We learned about the layers of the earth, seasons, days and how time is calculated, the layers of atmosphere, topographical features (though I didn't use that term with the kids).  We really covered quite a bit.  So much so that I spread it out over several days for the boys.

We also have a set of mini encyclopedia style books that we use to help in our Earth research.  Since Jonathan is in 5th grade, I felt it appropriate for him to do some more research on his own.  I really try to use the internet for research.  This is because he could spend HOURS on there.  I prefer him to use books and use the skills of research in the Library.

Now I am one of those moms who makes sure all the reading is done first and then we work on the lapbook.  I get too discombobulated when I try to work on the lapbook and do the reading at the same time.  So we worked on our lapbook and got it put together in a day.  Now, that did not include Jonathan filling in all of the information. 

One thing I didn't think about till afterward was that I should have had him at least filling out the pages as I was reading the books/lapbook pages or researching.  Instead he did all that afterward and while it worked out, he got frustrated at points cause he had to go back and find the answers again.  So maybe take that little bit of info as a tip for what not to do and what might be best.

Also, in this lapbook they had poetry and songs to go along with the Earth topic.  That was so nice to incorporate into our learning experience. 

Overall we really enjoyed our Journey Through Learning Lapbook experience.  It is nice to see the quality and information provided by AJTL in their lapbooks.  I can't wait to try more.  We currently use Apologia Science so I am going to get the one that corresponds to the program we are working through.  :)

Schoolhouse Teachers Review

Many, many moons ago, when I was being homeschooled, my mom had very little resources.  There were a handful of curriculums available at the time.  There was hardly anyone within a 2 hour drive that was homeschooling.  It was becoming more popular though.

As the years passed and my sister and I were getting ready to enter our high school years, I remember her looking for magazines and such to help her as we started through those years.  The one I remember was The Old Schoolhouse Magazine.  My mom kept that along with her Victoria magazines.  I loved to read her magazines.  I knew even back then I would be homeschooling.  I loved looking at the magazine.  The articles were always so encouraging and informative too. 

Fast-forward about 8 years, I was married, moved to Pennsylvania and started a family.  Our son was 5 when we started homeschooling and we had just had our 2nd son that spring.  That first year I used the curriculum that my family had used.  It was good for a year, then it had so much busy work that my son and I just got frustrated.

Over the past 6 years of homeschooling, our methods have changed from that very first year and even how I planned our homeschooling adventure to go.  I subscribed to The Old Schoolhouse Magazine about 2 years into our journey of homeschooling.  (took me a while to remember the name of it)

I have really enjoyed using The Old Schoolhouse Magazine.  When it went digital (and free too), I had no idea what was coming.  Come to find out that the people who own/run the magazine had a GREAT idea for homeschooling families.  :)  That idea was the Schoolhouse Teachers website.

I have actually been a user of SchoolhouseTeachers.com since it began.  I will say at first I didn't quite use it, but that was mainly due to having a new baby and taking care of her.  Once things settled down, I was able to look into it more.  I was really thrilled by all the content on there!  They had something for half of my children (I have 4).

We have been utilizing it more this fall and it has really added to what we are doing this year.  I don't use it as a complete curriculum, but to supplement what we were already doing.  My favorite thing is that I can download and print what I need, when I need it.  Something else that is great is that a lot of the past lessons are kept online!  So if you see something online you can access it at a later date.

One thing we did this late summer was study some of Africa.  One of the characters we were studying was David Livingston.  Well, I was looking on the SchoolhouseTeachers website and viola, what did I happen upon while searching?  A history lesson about David Livingstone!  Talk about perfect timing!  Since David Livingstone was mentioned in our Geography course, I was glad to have some History to tie in with it.  Life Lessons from Christian Luminaries: David Livingstone was the title of the course in SchoolhouseTeachers.  There was a short lesson (that is downloadable) and a page with discussion questions & additional research.  Plus a page called Share the Story Activities.  I really like this and used it to have my oldest son share the story of David Livingstone with me so I could tell what he had learned.  (We don't do many actual tests in this household)

A couple of years ago, I was introduced to lapbooking.  I had never heard of such a thing before.  I was so blessed to be part of a review team at that time for a company that produced lapbooks.  My children and I had such a blast work on them.  That is another thing that is part of Schoolhouse Teachers.  My boys and I are working on the December lapbook, Christmas in the Barn.  We are getting a late start (due to a malfunctioning printer) however, that was remedied this week.  I will update this post with pictures of our finished lapbook soon.  :)  They don't take long to do and are really quite easy to put together.  We absolutely love to do lapbooks!

Expedition Israel - A Download N Go Review

Expedition Israel, a Download N Go unit study.  Some quick info about Download N Go (DNG).  DNG's are a week long unit study tied in with lapbooking.  Don't be nervous about the lapbooking part.  If you have never done one, that's ok!  They are a fun way to integrate some hands on into your schooling.  DNG's are wonderful.  They have all the research done for you.  Amanda Bennett takes care of all of that so you can spend more time learning with your child.  She also finds extra books to read to your child that are suggested each day.  These are not necessary but always give a lot of extra information.

So where to begin.  I was so thrilled to see we would be reviewing Expedition Israel.  It took me back to a time 12 years ago.  A time when I was 18 and our church was going on a trip overseas.  A trip to Israel.  This unit brought back so many memories for me.  The videos of the cities in Israel, the people, the animals, and the beautiful landscape.  We also learned about great Heroes of the Bible with this unit.  It is so amazing to think about these men of the Bible.  They become real for the kids.  And I got to enjoy watching my kids learn about them.

Each day brought back something different for me and I was so excited to share my stories with them.  From Jerusalem to Bethlehem, to the Jordan River and the Sea of Galilee.  I relived my trip through this unit.  But more importantly I shared it with them by showing pictures, telling stories and giving them my thoughts as we watched the videos, read the websites and all the information that Amanda put into this unit. I am so thankful that she put this unit together.  It helped me be better able to share the stories of my trip.  Because she works so hard to find the best websites and videos it made it so much fun to share with my children.  In a sense, being able to share my trip experiences combined with this unit study made it feel so real to them. 

There are also some really cool things to do as part of the lapbook in this unit.  Jonathan's favorite was learning his name in Hebrew. 




My Hebrew Name:   Courtesy of My Hebrew Name  He thought that was "so cool."  He also like learning about the animals.  I was able to share with him my story of riding the camel. (which I highly recommend)  It is definitely a ride you won't forget.

I highly recommend this unit study.  Even if I hadn't been to Israel, this unit would make me want to go.  So you will definitely want to try and plan a trip.  My oldest son, Jonathan has already asked me when we are going to Israel.  I told him we will need to save in order to do it, but that we will plan a family trip to visit this country one day.

Magnificent Moon ~ Review

So this past week we discovered the Magnificent Moon! What a wonderful unit study by Amanda!  We loved watching the Apollo mission videos.  It is just amazing to think that man has been to the moon!  What is more amazing is all the things about the moon!  From the phases to the effects on Earth.  We also learned about an Astronaut each day.  From what they liked, to what they did after they went into space.  I am simply amazed that we have been able to go into space.

Each day covers a different topic regarding the moon.  Amanda always chooses the best things to study each day.  The videos and links that go with each day are wonderful.  The Mission videos always bring tears to my eyes.  It is wonderful to share this with my children.  I don't want history to be forgotten.  It is so important and I am so glad that Amanda has done all the research for these wonderful unit studies.

This has to be one of our favorite units so far.  It tied into what we have been doing in Science.  (we are covering Astronomy)

For those who are unfamiliar with Download N Go, they are unit studies created by Amanda Bennett.  They incorporate lapbooking into the daily activities.  If you don't know what lapbooking is, you needn't be afraid.  It is so simple and Amanda gives information about how to lapbook in the beginning of each unit.  :)  I love how she has researched each subject and chooses the best information and videos to go with these units.  It saves us time and makes our day go so much smoother.  The book lists are great too.  So many books, so little time!  My boys are always clamoring for more.  They don't like me to say we are done for the day.  This has been awesome for us!

Creation Camouflage DNG Review

Hello again from my 3 boys and I.  We have been quite busy this past month between celebrating Thanksgiving and preparing to celebrate Christmas.  During that time we typically take it a little easy for school.  And let me say that Download N Go is such an easy way to get a simple day of school in for us!  We have really been blessed to do these and offer our review of them.

For those of you not familiar with Download N Go, here is a brief overview of what they are.  Download N Go (DNG) is a combination of Unit Studies and Lapbooking.  A DNG covers one subject and lasts 5 days (or one school week).  Each day covers something different.  It is a PDF (Adobe Acrobat Reader File) that you download to your computer and print what you need and use the computer file to access the websites that are linked in the file.  All the research has been done for you!  This is AWESOME for those of us who may not know where to begin or are just way too busy to do any research.  Amanda Bennett, who is the author of the DNG line has done a WONDERFUL job in researching, compiling and organizing everything for you.

The next part is the lapbooking activities.  Now don’t get scared when you see the word lapbooking.  It really is quite simple.  It took us about 2-3 to really figure out what we wanted to do with ours but there really is no wrong way to put a lapbook together.  Amanda even has links to show how to put a lapbook together.  It couldn’t be easier than that!  Amanda really wants to make this as friendly and easy as she can for everyone to use.

Our review for Creation Camouflage.  Genesis 1: 24-25 (MSG)   God spoke: "Earth, generate life! Every sort and kind: cattle and reptiles and wild animals—all kinds."  And there it was: wild animals of every kind, Cattle of all kinds, every sort of reptile and bug.  God saw that it was good.

WOW!  Don’t those verses just amaze you?  God created EVERY living creature on this planet.  Cattle, reptiles, wild animals of all kinds, and bugs too!  He created every living thing!  He knew what they needed to live.  He designed everything.  From the stripes on the Zebra, to the color changing skin of the Chameleon; He knew they would need to blend in with their surroundings.  It is just simply amazing that He created all of that!

This past week we had the opportunity to work on Creation Camouflage.  What a treat!  From learning about many different kinds of animals and how they are able to camouflage themselves to their surroundings, to learning about where they live and why those places were created just for them.  Our days were spent watching some amazing videos and getting so much information from the websites.

One of the days had us rolling in laughter at the video we were watching.  I had taken it upon myself to add some sound effects to the video which make it all the more fun.  We probably watched that particular video 4-5 times with me doing the sound that made it extra funny.

Each day covered a different animal and their habitat.  Whether it was really rainy, super dry or even very cold every animal has its own form of camouflage.  It was amazing to learn where these animals lived, how they camouflaged themselves and why.  We also learned that the camouflage can be used as a form of defense for some creatures!  God certainly knew how to give each living thing what they needed!

So here is just a sample of what is covered each day.

See what I mean about a variety?!?  This unit was great at giving just a glimpse at the awesomeness of God’s creation!  You will LOVE each day!  I love how we have been able to use some of the trips we have done and tied them in to this unit study.  We went to Arizona to visit family last year and the boys remembered that and when we were working on day 3 they were telling me some of the stuff from that trip.  I love how this unit triggered those memories.   Now we have to go to the beach, someplace VERY cold (not that Southwest PA isn’t cold right now) and then the rain forest.  Oh do I see some travels in our future.  For now it is just nice to be able to watch the videos and talk about what we have seen, read and learned from these units.

Benjamin Franklin Download N Go Review

My boys and I are really enjoying the Download N Go (DNG) Unit studies!  We had never done anything quite like them in our prior 3 years of homeschooling.  When the opportunity to work through the unit studies and review them presented itself, I didn’t hesitate.  We had finished 3 years of a “traditional text-book” curriculum that was driving my son (and myself) up the wall.  Who wants to do 20-30 writing papers a day?  It was insane.  So this year we decided to do a more classical/eclectic approach to our schooling.  We do have a couple of text-books but mostly we read, do activities together and work on the computer for a couple of subjects.  The DNG units seemed to fit right in with our new way of learning.

For those of you who are not familiar with Download N Go, they are a series of unit studies that take 5 days to complete.  Amanda Bennett, the creator of DNG, has done all the leg work for you so all you have to do is open the PDF file, print the necessary pages and work through the unit.  Amanda also offers GREAT book lists to correspond with each day.  There is also a lapbook tie in to the unit studies.  Now don’t let lapbooking scare you!  It’s really quite simple!  Amanda has even put links in the front to help guide you in the adventure of lapbooking if this is new to you.

There was so much we learned about Ben Franklin this past week!  He was an inventor, musician, statesman and more!  Each day we learned a different thing about him.  I was so surprised at what I didn’t know about him!  (and I was homeschooled!)  There is so much that I didn’t know that was amazing.  (I will leave that to you to find out by purchasing the Benjamin Franklin DNG.  It is on special for $6.25)  I am so glad that my kids are getting such a wonderful education at home.

My boys LOVED watching the videos.  (they are 8 & 3)  Some of them were really “electrifying”.  **wink**  It is so fun watching their eyes light up and enjoy learning.  I am now planning a trip to Philadelphia (since we don’t live too far from there).  We love how several of the DNG unit studies have tied in to when we travel.  There is so much to do that I would love to spend more than a week on these units, but it is nice to feel that sense of accomplishment when it is completed.  It encourages the kids to do more and to finish so we can move onto the next unit study!

Expedition Australia Review

G’Day Mates!  Here is my family’s review of the Download N Go Unit for Expedition Australia!  For those of you who are not familiar with Download N Go, they are weekly unit studies that have a tie in to lapbooking.  (it’s not as scary as it sounds)  We have had the privilege of reviewing titles for Download N Go (which I’ll refer to as DNG forth going) for the past 3 months.  It has been a blast and a great way to take a break from the everyday routine.  We just add math and some phonics/language work in and you have a complete day!  We love doing this because it brings us all together.

Amanda Bennett, the author of the DNG unit studies, collects all the information for you and puts it in one central location.  This is such a GREAT help as we are a very busy family with 3 boys.  No more struggling to come up with a plan.  Everything is done for you!  She also comes up with some great additional reading.  The library is an invaluable resource.

We are also find lapbooking to be fairly easy as well.  At first it does seem intimidating but once you do a couple, it is really quite simple.  Amanda includes several links about lapbooking in the beginning of each DNG so that if you are not familiar with it you can quickly become acquainted with lapbooking.

So now onto Australia!  Might I say that now my children want to become world travellers!  Each day we learned about a different city, animal, new words in Aussie style.  It was great!  There was so much covered each day.  My oldest son loved how we learned how an Australian might say something we say here.  Some of the words had us laughing so hard we were crying.

The images of Australia are just simply exquisite.  We discovered how the country of Australia has a diverse set of climates.  From its vast deserts, to its beautiful seascapes, Australia is a BEAUTIFUL country.

Amanda chose some wonderful videos and awesome websites to go with this unit.  Each day covered something different and the content was beautiful.   We enjoyed learning about their culture, music, lifestyle, the natives, and some very cool stuff in between.
